Ajinomoto Co., (Thailand) Ltd., in collaboration with Wastebuy Delivery Co., Ltd., and with the support of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), has officially launched the “Happy Upcycling Project: Collect Multi-layer Plastic for New Uses”. This initiative aims to promote sustainable plastic waste management by systematically collecting and repurposing multi-layer plastic (MLP) waste. The campaign aims to collect 10 tons of MLP waste, which will be upcycled into furniture and other recycled products for donation to public spaces in Bangkok. The event, recently held at Chulalongkorn University’s Centenary Park, brought together over 400 environmentally conscious young individuals, including well-known eco-influencer “Kong GreenGreen” and special guest “William-Est,” an actor with GMMTV.
The “Happy Upcycling Project: Collect Multi-layer Plastic for New Uses” is an exemplary collaboration between the government, private sector, and public, working together to create a cleaner and greener society through upcycling. The project will begin collecting MLP waste on April 1, 2025, with a goal of reducing landfill waste by 10 tons. The upcycled products will be used to beautify Bangkok’s public parks and contribute to long-term environmental conservation. A range of hands-on activities were held at Chulalongkorn University’s Centenary Park to strengthen environmental awareness, including:
- “Waste-for-Points” – Attendees could exchange used MLP packaging for free souvenirs.
- “DIY Upcycling” – Participants transformed MLP waste into reusable items such as handbags and water bottle holders.
- “Second-Hand Exchange Zone” – Encouraged participants to minimize new purchases by exchanging pre-loved items.
The event also featured a discussion panel, “Happy Upcycling: Collect Multi-layer Plastic for New Uses,” where representatives from the government and private sector exchanged insights on sustainable waste management. The discussion emphasized the importance of collective action in tackling waste challenges.
Mr. Pornphrom Vikitsreth, Advisor to the Governor of Bangkok, highlighted the government’s role in supporting sustainable waste management, noting, “The BMA has continuously encouraged citizens to separate their waste, including initiatives like the ‘BKK Zero Waste’ program, which promotes food waste segregation. Recently, we introduced an increased waste collection fee policy, where businesses and individuals who properly sort their waste will be charged a lower rate. Encouraging the separation of MLP waste is another impactful measure, as it not only reduces overall waste but also provides financial opportunities through the resale of this material.”
Mr. Smith Phetdi, Sustainability Promotion Department Manager, Ajinomoto Co., (Thailand) Ltd., added, “Ajinomoto is committed to sustainability by advocating for MLP waste separation, which is notoriously difficult to manage. By collecting and upcycling these materials, we create value for the community. At the event, we set up a ‘Waste-for-Points’ booth where participants could exchange used MLP packaging for new Ajinomoto products, promoting the habit of waste segregation. The collected MLP waste will be transformed into furniture, such as tables and chairs, and donated to the BMA for use in public parks.”
Wastebuy Delivery, known for its community waste-buying network, has expanded its services to include MLP waste purchasing while educating the public on proper waste segregation. Mr. Boonsek Panudom, Vice President of Wastebuy Delivery Co., Ltd., emphasized, “We sincerely appreciate Ajinomoto for entrusting Wastebuy to facilitate the collection of MLP waste, contributing to a significant reduction in this type of waste while also demonstrating its value to the public. We will be integrating MLP waste collection into our Wastebuy platform, accessible via the Wastebuy Delivery app and our waste collection vehicles, which will visit various communities. This initiative will officially launch on April 1 across Bangkok, with the goal of collecting 10 tons of MLP waste.”
The campaign concluded with an educational workshop, “The Benefits of Waste Segregation,” led by eco-influencer “Kong GreenGreen,” which provided hands-on demonstrations on how to properly sort MLP waste and repurpose it into functional items like handbags and water bottle holders, reinforcing the idea that all waste has potential value when managed correctly. Actor “William-Est” from GMMTV also joined the event, adding excitement and attracting participation from over 400 environmentally conscious young individuals.
